The Big Lebowski - 1998, USA

Have you heard of "doing" the Big Lebowski, while you watch it?

If not, let me enlighten you... Jeff Bridge's character smokes a whole lotta weed and drinks a whole lotta White Caucasians (or White Russians - vodka, kaulua & cream/half n half - apparently meant to be lemonade, which would taste a whole lot better but that's not what Jeff is drinking) in the movie... so every time he has a J, you have one and every time he has a White Caucasian, you have one and ultimately you become so wasted it's not funny and the movie takes you on one hell of a trip.

To set the record straight, I didn't do the Big Lebowski and haven't... but we did do our own version! I know now that he drinks White Caucasians, but before the movie I thought it was Black Russians so I made Jess (my awesome blister), Dave and myself a Black Russian each before the movie and each time he had a drink or a smoke we had a sip... tame I know but fun all the same.

I have watched the Big Lebowski before, maybe I was semi-Lebowskied because the movie I watched the other night was NOT the movie I watched the first time... firstly, I thought Jeff Bridges lived in some kind of palacial mansion - this could have been because I lived in a student flat at the time of the first watching and his apartment was palacial in comparison which is a bit of a worry and secondly I was sure that Mark Wahlberg had a major part... he doesn't even feature! Instead there is Julianne Moore in a viking outfit, John Goodman in the best role of his life and so much bowling that I have the urge to go soon... Jess even had dreams of working at a bowling alley with a bar and TVs playing the Big Lebowski with White Caucasian specials when the movie was playing. Good stuff!

Lastly, however pissed off I get at someone I will never, ever ever piss on their rug. And I am now much more endeared to Jeff than I was after Tron Legacy...

2 down 99 to go

Reefer Madness - 1938, USA

I've been in Wellington for the holiday period (trying to head home now but Wgtn did not like that and we are delayed at the terminal for now...), and one of the great things about Welly is hanging out with the whanau. One such whanau member is my brother Dave, the true movie buff with a serious movie collection (he has 25 of the 101 cult movies - written on an envelope currently living in my handbag. Dave's onboard with my challenge so yesterday we settled down to watch Reefer Madness on Dad's 50 inch plasma on the lazyboy couch. (That couch is very cool and the ultimate movie watching couch - it's a three seater, and the middle seat folds down for a drink/food holder and the two seats on either side recline and the footrest pops out!!! Luxury!)

I will tell you two things about our viewing:
1. We were not in any way, shape or form wasted (it's a bit of cult following with stoners)
2. We watched it with the colour wash, so whilst it was the original it wasn't in it's exact original black n white format

You should watch this movie, wasted or not, it's hillarious - especially if you get the DVD with the special feature with Grandpa's Pot Smoking guide... advocating the use of weed for all elderly (he's been smoking it for over 30 years for his "glaucoma") and sickly.

I know the movie was made to put young people off weed, and if I'd watched it in 1938 I definitely would have been put off and thought that weed would make me into a horny, murderous bastard who would jitter and have ridiculous withdrawal symptoms in between each reefer... I think they might have mistaken weed for speed, although at the start they do show bricks and bricks of cocaine and heroin and say weed is a much worse drug than them both combined (I guess Coco Pops and DVDs hadn't been invented - am sure weed gives those guys some income every year!)... I also believe that weed wasn't illegal at that stage in the States and they were trying to make it as evil and illegal as possible.

Anyway, I cannot believe I haven't seen this movie before!

The Journey Begins - 101 Cult Movies To Watch

So from today I am disabling all of those online games I play (and am probably addicted to). Including Farmville and other Zynga games... They take up far too much time (although I do like trying to breed pink pony foals and collecting exotic breeds of cats) and I need that time to write. And I have promised myself that I will write EVERY day. Even if it's "I cannot write" over and over on a piece of paper, a letter, whatever I will write. I'm not making it a New Year's resolution, just a lifestyle decision (the difference between going on a "diet" and deciding to make healthy food decisions).

Although I have a couple of novels in my head, I also enjoy projects - big and small. I was in Borders today and came across a book on sale "101 Cult Movies You Must See Before You Die" general editor Steven Jay Schneider. I love movies (I've been to the last two 24 hour Incredibly Strange movie marathons - thanks Dave!) - I watch a lot and also volunteered for a couple of festivals this year and will do the same next year so the book got picked up and put in my bag.

But then I thought, what if I watch all of these movies from now and through next year and write about them? I've got lots of people who'd want to watch with me (in spirit or with me), I could have a couple of my own mini-marathons and it'd be a great writing project. I think I might even be able to convince my brother who is the ultimate movie buff, to get involved with this project too... we went through the list of movies together and he owns 25 of them which is no small feat when some of them are quite obscure!

There are sure to be challenges - firstly locating all of the movies, finding the time each week to watch 2 (that's what it needs to work out to on average), making sure I sit down and watch each movie from start to end and then writing about it. Also, I'm someone who starts a project with a hiss and a roar and great gusto but doesn't always finish, so I'll need to keep real and honest about this, but I can do it. I may even start tonight!

Overall, I expect some hillarity, better writing and a broadened movie horizon.

Wish me luck!

xx
